Disc Golf

The Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department’s Athletics Division maintains four disc golf courses around the city, including the 18-hole course at the Sports Complex. Like the course at Sunset Park, the Sports Complex course features three different tee lengths that allow players of different abilities to fairly compete against each other. The course also features water hazards and mandos for a complete disc golf experience!

What is Disc Golf?

  • Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee. The sport was formalized in the 1970s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest number of throws).

  • A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target, which is the hole. The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is called a “Pole Hole,” an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed.

  • Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether its sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. There are a few differences, though. Disc golf rarely requires a greens fee, you probably won’t need to rent a cart, and you never get stuck with a bad “tee time”. It is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of economic status.

About Tees

  • A Tee is where the hole begins. In Rocky Mount, some courses have several tee locations on each hole. Like in ball golf these different locations are typically described as Red, White and Blue Tees. The different tee sets create “a course within a course”, that allow players of different abilities to fairly compete against each other. Players may play from any tee location. The purpose is to play from the distance that you feel the most comfortable with. Pick the distance that you will have the most FUN with while playing.

  • A “Red Family Tee” is generally used by beginning players – adults, families, and children. The courses located at Sunset Park and the Rocky Mount Sports Complex each have a set of Red Tees, the perfect locations to learn the game.

  • A “White Recreational Tee” is generally used by the developing recreational/amateur player, or the beginner looking for a more challenging experience. All four courses in Rocky Mount (Farmington Park, Englewood Park, Sunset Park, and the Rocky Mount Sports Complex) have a set of White Tees.

  • A “Blue Advanced Tee” is generally used by the advanced player, or any player looking for a really challenging experience. Three courses in Rocky Mount (Farmington Park, Sunset Park, and the Rocky Mount Sports Complex) have a set of Blue Tees.
